Heritage Events


2007 will be jam packed with events celebrating Jersey's Heritage. There are a few events organised by the National Trust for Jersey, these are specified with contact details below.

Wednesday 30th May – Sunday 3rd June - Pirates
Venue: Maritime Museum
Discover the life of a pirate, learn to talk like a pirate, dress up like a pirate, take part in pirate crafts and find their flags. There will be pirate treasure hunts throughout the week and lots of pirate adventures..

Saturday 30th June – Sunday 1st July - Storytelling
Venue: La Hougue Bie
La Hougue Bie will be transformed into a theatre for fabulous stories and fantastic storytellers. Hear tales being told and sagas being sung.

Saturday 11th August - Secrets and Spies
Venue: Mont Orgueil
Explore the themes of espionage, spies, detection, clue finding and codes. Have a go at being a history detective or an historical spy with activities including codes, forgery and disguises.

Sunday 26th – Monday 27th August - English Civil War
Venue: Elizabeth Castle
Elizabeth Castle has been seized by the New Model Army. Cromwell’s men will be demonstrating the weapons and armour of the 17th century. In the lead up to the event, they will be ‘billeted’ at Hamptonne, showing how soldiers and their families lived.

Saturday 8th September - Heritage Open Day

A range of rarely accessible properties will be open free of charge today. Organised by The National Trust for Jersey.

Saturday 22nd September - Fête des Dolmens
Venue: Dolmens
Island wide tour of archaeological sites. Hop on the special dolmen bus and take a trip back 6,000 years to visit the Island’s ancient ritual sites.

Thursday 25th – Saturday 27th October - Black Butter Making
Venue: The Elms
Join the National Trust for Jersey as they make this delicious local delicacy from the Island's apple harvest. Peel the apples, stir the pot and learn about the history and tradition of Black Butter making in Jersey and how it can be used with different foods today.

Abram Games: Maximum Meaning, Minimum Means
Barreau le Maistre Gallery - until 26th February 2007
Artwork by one of the twentieth century’s most influential designers - Abram Games (1914-1996) who created symbols for the Festival of Britain & the BBC. Including posters made while an official war artist, adverts for Guinness & award winning stamp designs commissioned by the Island of Jersey.

Hamptonne Country Life Museum
The Jersey Cow, the Rural Face of Jersey

Updated for 2007, this exhibition tells the story of the world-famous breed, from its origins to the present day. It examines the dairy industry and how it has developed from hand milking to the computerised milking parlours of today.

The Camera Never Lies - the making of “Under the Greenwood Tree”
Upstairs in the Syvret House – until November 2007
In summer 2005, Hamptonne was transformed into the fictional village of Melstock for the television adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s famous novel. This exhibition includes photographs that document how the film set was created and tells the story of the filming; it also features sets from the ITV drama.

La Hougue Bie Museum
2007 is the 50th anniversary of the Le Catillon Coin Hoard and the archaeological museum will be marking this with an updated display of some of the Armorican coins that were found in a field in Grouville.

Elizabeth Castle
The Shackles of Memory - the Slave Trade
Governor’s House – 4th June – 30th September 2007
In 2007 Britain celebrates the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. The JHT have translated into English Les Anneaux de la Mémoire – the Shackles of Memory, an exhibition produced in Nantes, the leading slave port in France, which examines the trade. There will also be a supplementary panel highlighting Jersey’s role in the trade.

An exhibition helping everyone to understand the castle’s history, the medieval world in which it was built and its significance to Jersey’s history over the past 800 years.

Maritime Museum
Trafalgar - Jersey men in Nelson’s Navy
A Store Exhibition Gallery – until May 2007
The centrepiece of this exhibition about the Royal Navy of Nelson’s day is a model of the Battle of Trafalgar at the moment that the British Fleet broke through the Combined Fleet’s line.

A Life's Work
A Store Exhibition Gallery – From 4th July 2007
An exhibition of star objects gathered from the seabed in a diving career spanning five decades. Amongst these items collected and conserved by Tony Titterington are a sonar, early 19th century material from the wreck of the Determinée and never-before-seen material from World War 2

HMS Havick
HMS Havick was a quarterdeck sloop, originally Dutch built in 1784. After its capture and commission by the Royal Navy it served in the English Channel until wrecked in St Aubin's Bay by a terrible storm in November 1800. The exhibition includes conserved items from the wreck and gives an insight into the lives of ordinary seamen in Nelson's Navy, as well as relating the trauma of the fateful shipwreck.

The Art of the Model Maker
Ever since boats have been used, models have been made with varying degrees of accuracy. Some as gifts to the gods, others to help the builders gain drink money at a journey's end. A showcase of the the Heritage Trust's model boat collection.

A fund-raising exhibition organized by the NACF, of works by local artists inspired by the theme of Jersey wildlife. The exhibition will be open to public daily from 10 am to 3.30 pm Monday to Saturday inclusive

Saturday 9th June - Mont Orgueil - Here be Dragons!
Come to Mont Orgueil to find out about mythical creatures and dragons. Find out whether these creatures really existed and what they might have looked like. Design your own fantasy creature and find the hidden dragons around the castle.

Saturday 16th June - La Hougue Bie - Money! Money! Money!
To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Le Catillion hoard of coins, come to La Hougue Bie to have a go at finding the hidden treasure. Try and identify some of the different types of coins and find out fascinating facts about money and have a go at designing your own coin or paper money.

Saturday 14th July - Elizabeth Castle - Birds in the Bay
Come and have a go at birdwatching at Elizabeth Castle. There are lots of different birds that live at the Castle and who fly all around St Aubin’s Bay. Can you help to identify them? Learn some fascinating facts about birds. Have a go at making your own bird that flies and design a fantasy bird.

Wednesday 25th July - Maritime Museum - Birthday Boats
Come and help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Maritime Museum. Write the Museum a birthday card. Have a go at making your own boats and discover all about floating and sinking. Learn about the different types of boats and ships and see if you can find the hidden boats around the Museum

Wednesday 1st August - Elizabeth Castle - Swords and Soldiers
What would a castle be without soldiers and their weapons? Come to Elizabeth Castle and find out about different types of weapons from arrows to pistols and long swords to cannons. See if you can find the hidden swords around the Castle and make your own medal.

Wednesday 8th August - La Hougue Bie - Ice Age Escapades
Come to La Hougue Bie and have fun with cave painting and prehistoric art. Learn about pigments and colours and have a go at creating your very own piece of cave painting. Find out what animals were drawn, what the paintings might have meant and where in the world these cave paintings can be found. Take part in a trail to find hidden drawings around La Hougue Bie.

Wednesday 15th August - Hamptonne - Scarecrows and Stories
One of the farmer's friends, scarecrows are still used to scare away birds that eat the seeds and flowers of certain plants. Come to Hamptonne to make your own scarecrows, learn about growing seeds and hear some fantastic stories about scarecrows.

Saturday 18th – Sunday 19th August - La Hougue Bie - Dinosaur Days
The first 2-day Flash Day at La Hougue Bie, we will be discovering all about Dinosaurs! We will show you how you can be an explorer and try to find buried bones and identify your finds. Discover more about dinosaurs and fossils and what they tell you about history. Take part in the Dinosaur trail around the site and have a go at making your own dinosaur.

Wednesday 22nd August - Mont Orgueil - Kings and Queens
Come to Mont Orgueil and discover fantastic facts about Kings and Queens. Make your own crown to wear and dress up. Follow a fun trail around the castle. Discover how to write a charter with feather quills and design your own seal.

Saturday 15th September - Hamptonne - Arty Animals
Come to Hamptonne to find out about how you can look after your animals and have a go at creating some animal crafts. We look after plenty of animals at Hamptonne including cows, pigs, chickens and cats. Find out how we do it and why animals are important.

Saturday 6th October - Hamptonne - Pomme Parade
In anticipation of Apple Day and La Faisie d’Cidre at Hamptonne, come and find out all about Apples. Have a go at apple crafts, find the different apples hidden around Hamptonne and learn about superstitions that Apples have inspired.

Wednesday 31st October - Jersey Museum - Art Attack
Come to the Jersey Museum and have fun with Art. We will be doing lots of different types of art using the paintings in the Art Gallery as inspiration and everyone can have a go.

Saturday 17th November - Maritime Museum - Ocean Animals
The world's oceans cover more than 70% of our planet's surface and the rich web of life they support is the result of hundreds of millions of years of evolution. Learn about what the sea means to us, and what animals live in it. Find the hidden ocean animals in the Museum and create and make your own ocean animals.

Saturday 1st December - Jersey Museum - Crafty Christmas
Come to the Jersey Museum and start your Christmas festivities by creating your own Christmas cards and gifts. Come and make your own tree decorations and fabulous advent calendars!
